I recall that on the previous day we had snatched a memorable victory at Roebuck, who at one stage needed only 15 runs to win with 5 wickets remaining, but we were not prepared for the Boy's Own Comic events to follow. To my disappointment, we were put into bat and despite what in hindsight looks a good batting line-up, we were soon in all kinds of trouble against Bagshot's opening attack of Theobald and Fowles. No one got into double figures, though Schoey and Extras both reached 9. Fowles finished with 5 for 19 from his 12 overs and the whole innings took only 27 overs to complete. If we had not had a delay for rain the match would have been over before tea. As it was, to compensate our visitors for such a non-event of a match, we rather nobly waived our tea charge.
With only a score of 37 to defend, it is difficult to think very positively, but we decided upon all out attack to take as many wickets as possible before the total was passed. As it turned out, Chris Ford and Mark Baxter proved that there's no such thing as a free tea, while our fielders gave nothing away. With Bagshot at 23 for 5, we were in the identical situation to the previous day, but by then of course we knew that victory was possible.
