Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Sunday XI v Royal Ascot on Sun 28 Aug 2011 at 1:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 152 runs
Match report
O'LOUGHLIN AND BARRON GIVE ROYAL ASCOT A BATTING LESSON AS CROWS AVENGE EARLY SEASON THUMPING
Crows won the toss and elected to bat first on a damp pitch.
The Sunday team unbeaten run continues for another week. Its now 16 weeks, 10 matches since the Sunday Crows last lost a game. 29 different players this season shows the Crows have strength and depth in their squad comparable to that of Man City.
Sunday was the repeat of the last match the Sunday Crows lost. Facing Royal Ascot, who back in May thrashed us, it was a chance for us to show them what we're made of. And boy did we show them!!!
Winning his first toss of the season, the captain elected to bat. Despite the rain interruptions, the Crows seemed to start steady but then lost 2 early wickets of Elrick and Avrili, with only 26 on the board. Then came the partnership of the teachers. With the Maroon Baroon on 10, and The Judge coming in, it was the start of a 151 3rd wicket partnership, only 10 runs short of the club record. With some sublime stroking at both ends, the teachers shots were hurting Ascot. After 24 overs, Barron finally fell to Thurandu for 84, and O'Loughlin 3 balls later for 75. A brilliant partnership, laying a great foundation for the team to progess.
Unfortunately, then came a mini collapse, with those 2 wickets joined by the wickets of Leach, Brown and Clarke, falling in the space of 3 overs, all to Thurandu. Fortunately, Leach had had time to get a quick fire 15, to keep the score rolling. Then in came Sparkle and DJ to steady the ship for the majority of the 7 remaining overs, and putting on a further 18 runs between them.
Lastly in came H and Jimmy. Jimmy, trying his hardest not to extend his lead in the duck prize, put down a wall at one end, and with the odd run from H per over, saw out the last 3 overs. The Crows finished on a defendable 217.
After tea and more rain, the Ascot innings could start. The Crows continued their fine form of previous weeks in the field. A true team unit with backing up, covering, supporting, diving, chasing etc etc.
Opening up the bowling DJ soon set the record he'd not change for 8 overs. Fast and zippy, he clean bowled the first 2 batsmen, and then got edges from the 3rd and 5th. The Leach attacking from the other end eventually took the Ascot topscorer with another edge.
Will was like a frog behind the stumps, crouched down ready to spring into action, his leaping stopping all that came his way. Ending with 3 catches, each taken in totally different places, from inches above the ground to feet above his head.
Having bowled out 15 overs and seen off the Ascot top 5, in came the Judge and Ad Lad. Great tight bowling from both against the tail, only giving away 8 runs in 6 overs, taking 2 wickets. Ad got his wicket with the slowest reaction catch ever seen, Sparkle had to get his momentum up first, before he could tip forward enough to make the catch low down. Then Jules clean bowled the solid Champion. It was clearly time to change the "costly" Judge, having gone for 1 run off 3 overs. Sean ambled up, and within 3 balls finished Ascot off. Taking the last wicket with a fumbling juggling catch from Barron at slip. Clearly, a great decision by the captain.
Royal Ascot raised the white flag and didn't send out their 10th man, claiming injury. Granted, he had stuck out his shin to stop Barron's hardest shot. The two sounds heard at the boundary were the willow of Barron's bat shortly followed by the bone of Bell's shin. How he stood afterwards was amazing, and the golf ball bump was instant.
Great team performance by the Crows.
