Sandhurst v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Sunday XI on Sun 21 Aug 2011 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
PARTRIDGE AND HESTER STEER CROWS TO MEMORABLE VICTORY OVER SANDHURST
Sunday Crows continue their unbeaten run since May 8th with a tense 1 wicket win over Sandhurst.
The wicket was similar to a ploughed field, and Sandhurst elected to bat first. It appeared a good decision as the openers put on a good partnership. Chances were coming but the ball always seemed to land a few agonising feet away from fielders. The breakthrough came as Jules bolwed the opener with a great delivery, that swung back in about 3 feet and took out top of off. It was promptly followed by a Darren Gough style celebration that added to the intensity of the game. Saviour continued his good run of bowling form by sending their no 3 back without making a mark. Sheppard then took 2 further wickets with more top bowling. Clapham was still threatening to score well, until Jules got him fishing at one. The edge carried low, and Shilts took a smart diving catch. The Crows celebrated, but the batsman started to walk then stopped. Jules gave him some choice words, and he marched off to the pavillion chuntering away to himself. The Barron and Dan then bowled some really tight spells, cleaning up the tail without much more being added. Barrons 2-11 gives hima late charge for the Sunday bowling prize. Tim Leach took some good catches (we wont mention the dropped ones!), and the innings was ended when Shakir recklessly charged down the wicket to Dan, only for Shilts to whip the bails off. All out for 112. It seemed a low score, but the track looked a difficult one. Top fielding all round helped back up the good bowling.
Early wickets fell, as Junior was run out for 0 as his dodgy hamstring gave way. Si follwed after making a solid start. Rich Barron (24) then put on good partnerships, firstly with Tim Leach who smashed his way to 11, and Don Joseph who got his highest Crows score with a good 22. When Barron got out the wickets tumbled quickly, with the Clarke brothers getting their first ducks of the season. Jules then batted well for his 20, but Jimmy was given LBW for his 4th Duck of the season. What happened next will live long in the Crows memory. Stand in Skipper Rich Hester came to the crease to join Dan Partridge with the Crows needing 12 to win off 9 overs. If they batted out the match would be drawn. Sandhurst peppered the batsmen, who put fingers ribs and arm pits on the line, as they blocked out and nurdled ones and twos. Sandhurst were becoming increasingly frustrated and started mounting the pressure. In the penultimate over Phipps put one short and wide, which Dan superbly dispatched to the boundary - 2 need for victory. With 8 balls remaining Dan guided one past the slips and it rolled away for a boundary to seal a 1 wicket victory for the Crows. The pavillion erupted as Crowthorne had turned a victory to a defeat and then into a victory again. Great work from everyone in an epic team performance, which will live long in the memory in what is by far the best Sunday game of the season.
