Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 1st XI v Peppard 2 on Sat 23 Jul 2011 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Crows P-P-Pick up a win over P-P-peppered P-P-Peppard P-P-Penguins
Crows won the toss and decided to field.
A superb bowling and fielding performance set up the Crows take their first home league win of the season in comfortable fashion.
A youthful Peppard side arrived at New Ground to find the Crows warming up with fielding drills (hurling the ball at Mickey as hard as possible). The focus and team spirit from the Crows was for all to see and from the first ball, Peppard found themselves on the back foot.
The opening pair of Ems “Tennis Ball Cricket” Patel and Ross “stick a bell on it” Chalmers dominated the batsmen and it wasn’t long until the wickets began to tumble. Having taken 3 wickets between them, Terry “Malinga” Charles and Azza “I usually bowl 25 overs straight through” Long were given the cherry to continue the good work.
With intelligent bowling and fielding the Crows had restricted the Peppard skipper to face only 4 balls in 7 overs. Attempting to force the run rate, he popped a tough catch up to Chalmers who made it look easy.
Crows continued with the pressure with both Steve “Mr Keepy-uppy” Northall and Kevin “Ironman” Glazier both almost taking spectacular catches. Not to be outdone the skipper Mark “Teflon” Knight spectacularly dropped a regulation catch behind the timbers. Knight hung his head. Azza demanded another over.
With Peppard struggling to make runs Northall and Luke “let’s smash these m******” Jouanides were given the ball to continue the pressure. Accurate bowling resulted in more wickets falling at steady intervals.
The tail was exposed and it was left to Dan “you can’t pick my bowling” Partridge to put the innings to an end with the returning Chalmers.
Peppard totalled 105 all out in 36 overs, and half the Crows job was done.
After a hearty tea, Mickey “1st slip specialist” Gopie and Glazier headed to the crease and made a steady and solid start. Having almost a 40 partnership on the board, following some fine cuts and drives, Gopie played over the ball and was sent back to the hutch. Glazier, looking comfortable, soon followed as a mis-timed shot was neatly pouched.
With Ems and Richard “haven’t touched the ball all day” Barron at the crease, the fine hitting and stroke play moved Crows closer to the total. Barron looked comfortable until another mis-timed shot was nabbed. Ems hit a six that was caught on the boundary as the nonchalant fielder stepped onto the line. Two balls later, he did exactly the same, but this time the fielder made no such mistake.
With 20 runs left to get Stevie N was joined by Turbo Terry. Both players “peppering” the boundary as the early finish and cold beer was calling Turbo blistered a 4 past the bowler to seal the emphatic victory.
All that was left was a mad dash to the local Offy for the skipper to fulfil his promise of cold beer for a win. Having completed the victory is less than 19 overs, the game was completed over an hour before the bar opened! Canned beer and keepy-uppy ensued.
Excellent performance all round and a lot can be taken out of the game. Areas for improvement in concentration whilst batting, and this side can push on from strength to strength for the rest of the season.
A quick thanks to the supporters that came down (Jimmy, Saviour, Dainesy, Ad Lad etc...), to Sheila for the tea and of course not forgetting the WAGs. Your support is always appreciated. Any supporters feel free to hang about for a beer with us in the future!
