Peppard 2 v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 1st XI on Sat 21 May 2011 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
PEPPARD CRUSH 10-MAN CROWS.
Ten-man Crows fell to a convincing defeat at Peppard after failing to capitalise on a patient start with the bat and early wickets with the ball.
Crows were put in by opposing skipper Woolfrey, keen to have a bowl at a makeshift-looking batting line-up. Last minute call-up Hill broke the shackles of four opening maidens with a boundary through the covers, but was bowled next over by a dipping full-toss. Glazier looked to be laying the foundations of a long innings when an effortless checked shot for six over long-on was followed up with a textbook forward defensive next ball, but a couple of overs later an ambitious shot to a ball of good length sent the ball skywards and eventually down into mid-off’s hands. With Gopie batting patiently at the other end Knight looked to attack - timing was tricky with the ball not coming onto the bat but the scoring rate began to move along nicely until he departed for 23, also swinging over a full-toss. Gopie and Charles made serene progress against the change bowlers, and when Gopie found his timing with some swept boundaries against slow bowler Mayers, Crows appeared to be in a good position to take control of the game at 111-3. Sadly, the innings fell apart at this point. Charles fell to Mayers for 34 and in the same over skipper Chalmers moseyed down the pitch to be stumped for a duck. Woolfrey returned to take three wickets in his second spell and Mayers had Jouanides lbw sweeping – the batsman a little disappointed not to be reprieved under Ian Bell’s 2.5m rule. The in-form Clarke, who had forsaken the first quarter of the game in favour of an extended motoring tour of the South Oxfordshire countryside, cracked one boundary but fell for 5 and suddenly 111-3 had become 127-9 (all out) and Crows had committed the cardinal sin of not batting out their overs.
A look in the scorebook showed the home team had been bowled out for 120-ish the previous week, and opening bowlers Chalmers and Glazier charged in at a good pace, perhaps finding more sideways movement that the home attack had. Tentative shots from both openers saw them lose their off stumps to a fired-up Chalmers and Crows were in the game at 20-2. Unfortunately Legg played a sensible and eventually match-winning innings, waiting for the loose balls and happy to block anything else. Half-chances were few and far between, with an awkward leg-side chance behind the stumps and a few mishits and edges not quite going to hand. A flurry of leg-side boundaries brought the target suddenly within reach and standards begin to slip as fielders’ minds perhaps drifted towards their plans for the evening. The sole moment of cheer was a late wicket maiden for Leach, winning an lbw decision from umpire Brown in his first over. Crows left the field well beaten and (surely temporarily!) bottom of the league table.
