Match report Crowthorne Cricket Club got their Berkshire League division 2 campaign off to an unfortunate start, as they lost out to Sonning’s 3rd XI at Reading Blue Coat school on Saturday.

Bowling first, Crowthorne picked up early wickets through John Cole and Steve Northall, but things changed when Sonning left-hander Mark Richards strode to the crease at number 4. Richards may have considered himself unfortunate to be turning out for his club’s 3rd team, having previously played over 100 games for the first XI with a batting average of 45. Richards sent a message to his club’s selectors with a powerful 132, despite surviving a huge LBW shout off the bowling of Sheppard, and the occasional dropped half-chance. Sonning’s innings finished on a mammoth 329-7, with the unfortunate Cole going for 122 runs for his 2 wickets. Crowthorne debutant Mehul Patel bowled with pace and accuracy to finish with 3-68.

Chasing such a huge total was always going to be hard work for Crowthorne, but they started brightly with big-hitter Tim Leach finding regular boundaries, while at the other Simon Sheppard kept the scoreboard moving with a series of classy singles and boundaries. When Leach fell, caught in the deep for 23, Mark Knight came in and kept up the pace, and Crowthorne found themselves up with the run-rate and hopeful of an unlikely result. Sheppard fell to a sharp catch in the slips just short of his 50, this brought Steve Northall in and he also took a liking to the Sonning attack, finding the short school-ground boundaries at regular intervals for a powerful 45 runs. Crows hopes were ended as Knight was dismissed LBW, and captain Pete Northall fell soon after for no runs.

Despite a resolute lower order partnership between Dan Partridge and John Cole, Crowthorne ended up 217 all out, well short of Sonning’s total.
