Match report Crowthorne 1st XI vs Ibis Mapledurham 2nd XI – 25/6/05

Crowthorne 186-6 (45 overs) lost to Ibis Mapledurham 187/7 (35.4overs)

Tim Osbourne defied the pitch and the weather to hit a magnificent 93 to lead Ibis to a 3 wicket win over struggling Division 3 outfit Crowthorne who are still to register their first win of the campaign.

Ibis won the toss and had no hesitation to ask the hosts to bat on what appeared to be a difficult batting pitch. However openers Gary Attree and Neil Stent raced to 37 in quick time before Attree fell to a superb catch from a full blooded shot that deserved to disappear to the boundary rather than being caught.

Skipper Adam Elrick promoted himself to number 3 in the batting order in an attempt to build on the early impetus gained from the flying start that his opening pair had given him. Elrick was in positive mood and led from the front adding 52 for the second wicket with Stent who looked solid for his 35. However Elrick’s departure for 27 assisted the visitors who were able to tie down the Crowthorne batsmen in the middle phase of their innings.

Robin Stent hit 5 fours and a six in his quick fire 34 as Crowthorne accelerated their score in the closing overs. In addition to an unusual amount of extras (35), Russel Smith-Gander pushed the score to 186-6 with a valuable 17no in the last 2 overs to give Crowthorne maximum batting points and a good total to defend on a pitch and weather conditions that were deteriorating as the game progressed.

Elrick’s side got off to the best possible start when strike bowler Aran Long removed both openers to leave Ibis struggling on 17/2 and Crowthorne sniffing victory in the increasing gloom. However Osbourne was in commanding form hitting several sixes and numerous fours in a innings that swung the match back into Ibis’s favour. Dave Lavers joined him and between them they added 67 runs for the 4th wicket before Lavers succumb to the swing bowling of Dan Partridge, falling lbw for 35.

Aran Long returned to the attack to add a further 2 wickets to the three he picked up in his first spell . This set up a tight finish and gave Long a deserves 5 wicket haul. But with the requirement down to single figures Crowthorne couldn’t find the extra bit of fortune to clean up the tail, with several near misses and close chances going amiss, Ibis held on to scrape home by 3 wickets.

Crowthorne now have a 2 week break to re-group and come back refreshed before they start the second half of a campaign that has seen them not necessarily reaping the rewards for their effort and endeavours to date.
