Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 1st XI v Sandhurst 2 on Sat 15 Jul 2006 at
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 57 runs
Match report
Berkshire League Division 3 – Sandhurst 2nd XI vs Crowthorne
Report by Garth Imms
Crowthorne 251 ao bt Sandhurst 194 ao by 57 runs
Crowthorne 35pts
Sandhurst 10 pts
Crowthorne extended their unbeaten run to 7 matches with a clinical victory over local rivals Sandhurst on Saturday. It is a victory that re-enforces Crowthorne’s promotion bid as they start to build some breathing space between themselves ands the chasing pack.
Sandhurst won the toss and elected to bowl first on a hot afternoon. The pitch looked good and the outfield was in superb condition so Crowthorne will not have been too disappointed to be asked to bat first. However their innings got of to a faltering start as 2 wickets fell in the very first over.
Sandhurst must have sensed a repeat of the first meeting between these two sides earlier in the season when they routed The Crows for 83. However Neil Stent and Jo Morgan steadied the ship as they added 59 runs for the 3rd wicket before Morgan fell to the bowling of Russel Stone.
Stent and Adam Elrick continued the good work that Morgan had started but it was when Elrick and Morgan Kemp came together that the runs started to flow freely. Kemp got off the mark with a big six and added a further 5 maximum’s on his way to a blistering career-best 92. Sandhurst’s bowlers had no answer to Kemp who found the boundary with apparent ease as he and Elrick put on 109 for the 6th wicket. Elrick himself added 49 of those runs as he combined some hard running with some powerfully hit boundaries.
With a big score always a possibility, and with overs and wickets in hand Crowthorne turned the screw on their rivals as Simon Sheppard and Garth Imms came in at the end to push the score over 250 with a cameo innings of 19 and 12 respectivey.
Sandhurst did however manage to bowl The Crows out in the final over to register maximum bowling points but will have been disappointed to concede such a total having won the toss. Stone finished as the pick of the bowlers with 6 wickets.
In response, Crowthorne bowler Keith Power put them on their way to victory removing Simon Coxwell for 4, who saw his off-stump cartwheel through the air having been beaten by the pace of Power. At the other end Elrick removed Ross Barrah for 5 as the young batsman tried a big hit, but missed and was comprehensively bowled.
However skipper Kevin Speakman and Dave Whiteoak came to Sands rescue as they shared a stand of 80 to put their team right back in the frame. Speakman finally succumb to the leg-spin of Neil Stent for 58 but Whiteoak was joined by Russel Stone who after taking 6 wickets earlier in the afternoon opened his shoulders to hit a brisk 34.
Sandhurst were up with the run-rate and had wickets in hand to go for victory but the contest was turned on it’s head with the introduction of Left arm bowler Dan Partridge. In an extraordinary first over he claimed 3 victims for 0 runs. First Lippit skied one to square leg where Kemp took the catch straight out of the sun, then the very next ball Stone was caught by Gary Hampshire. Sandhurst survived the hat-trick ball, but Partridge then trapped Calvin Hall lbw for a duck and the whole advantage had swung firmly back in Crowthorne’s direction.
This flurry of wickets seemed to break Sandhurst resolve as Kemp and Partridge put the brakes on the run rate as well as taking vital wickets. Kemp bowled Clive Watson for 4 and then took a catch off Partridge as Ian Cousins was tricked by a slower ball and spooned a catch to short extra cover.
With victory in sight for Crowthorne, it had become a matter of hanging in there for Sandhurst who had 7 overs to survive for the draw needing an improbably 58 more runs to win. However Kemp struck with the first ball of his next over as the final Sandhurst batsman Richard Costambeys prodded one to silly point where Partridge clung on to the catch to give Crowthorne victory and maximum points.
Skipper Elrick was understandably pleased afterwards: When we got put in. we had a plan and we stuck to it and I’m delighted we won. Our only defeat his season was when we got skittled for 83 by Sandhurst, so to post a score in excess of 250 this time around was very pleasing. Morgan Kemp was outstanding with bat and ball and he even took a couple of good catches but I think his innings of 92 really set this victory up for us today.
I thought we applied ourselves well in the field as we knew there were runs to be scored and we managed to drag the game back when Sandhurst looked like they may chase down the runs. But the over where 3 wickets fell really gave us the impetus to push for victory. Hopefully this run can continue as we are playing some very good cricket at present”
Crowthorne have narrowed he gap between themselves in third place and Ibis Mapledurham in 2nd, who lost to top of the table Purley-on-Thames. With 2 promotion places up for grabs it is important that The Crows maintain this run of form when they play Swindon NALGO on Saturday at Great Hollands.
