Sonning 3 v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 1st XI on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 1:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 28 runs

Match report Crowthorne kept alive their feint hopes of a top-2 berth with a 29 run win over Sonning. On an interesting looking pitch, Crows won the toss and chose to bat first to try and maximize points. Crows got off to a good start with Micky Gopie and Simon Sheppard making solid progress before Gopie was adjudged to have nicked one behind. Sheppard and Steve Northall came together and the run rate ticked along nicely until Northall was undone by a low-bouncing ball that clean bowled him for 20.

This sparked a mini collapse with Jules O’Loughlin being run out and 3 more quick wickets fell soon after that to leave Crows reeling. However a stoic partnership between Andrew Taylor and Aran Long, really settled the ship and allowed Crows to edge towards a competitive target. Long in particular looked increasingly comfortable and struck a big 6 on his way to 31 not out. He was ably assisted by Jimmy Carson who dug in with long to ensure Crows used all of their allotted overs and moved the target towards respectability. Crows ended on 172-9, agonizingly short of full batting points. Sheppard made 47 and Ross Chalmers hit a promising 17 before finding a fielder on the boundary.

Sonning’s response got off to a patchy start with Long removing Smith and the dangerous looking Waqas Tahir, whilst at the other end, Ali Driver kept the scoreboard ticking over. Driver proved to be the backbone of the Sonning innings with a patient 58, whilst Matt Evans briefly made it look like Sonning may cruise to victory. However Aran Long had other ideas and produced a display of bowling that Crows have seen many a time over the years. He clean bowled 4 batsmen and took an acrobatic catch of his own bowling to end with figures of 6-45. With 9 wickets down, Sonning put their foot on the pedal and the big hitting Nick Ashton gave the Crows a few headaches, but it was to be in vein as Dan Partridge clean bowled Phil Wilding to wrap up a tense victory.

Crows Skipper Sheppard told the Times: We really ground out this win against a decent side. We’ve given ourselves a chance going into the final game, although it’s out of our hands somewhat. Aran Long put in a fine all-round performance to really put us in a winning position. He was cool under pressure with the bat and then ripped through them with the ball.
