Englefield v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Sunday XI on Sun 12 Sep 2010 at 1:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 76 runs
Match report
Crows travelled to West Berkshire for one of the most popular matches on the Fixture Card for a Friendly with Englefield.
Crows were without inspirational skipper Dave “Micky Mouse” Shaw who had deserted his troops in favour of a trip to EuroDisney. In his absence Dan Partridge too captaincy duties and made a good start by defying the laws of probability and winning the toss. The indecisive Partridge couldn’t say the words “we’ll bat first” quickly enough.
Crows opened with Dean Timms and Robin Stent. Whilst Englefield opened the bowling with Mr Angry [if that’s the last mention of him in the report it will be a miracle]
Timms and Stent started in positive if not spectacular fashion, accumulating runs at a good pace without taking too many risks. Mr Angry started the game in reasonable spirits it has to be said. His mood was to be enhanced somewhat by tempting Junior into trying to hit him into the Duck Pond only to miss the ball and see his off-peg knocked back much to the non-anger of Mr Angry.
Timms was joined by The Red Barron who immediately showed why he was plundered so many runs this summer, by hitting a 50 in double quick time. There were shots to all parts of Deer Park as Von Richthofen really put the Englefield bowlers to the sword. Timms continued on his merry way too as the Crows began to amass a formidable looking total.
Barron departed soon after reaching his 50 , however, offering a simple catch in the covers. This however opened up a passage of play that could only be described as farcical. Skipper Partridge strode to the crease, eying the short leg-side boundary. Having got off the mark the previous over, Partridge connected well to the first ball of JD Van Der Mervwe’s over, hitting the ball back hard to the bowler, who in his attempts to catch it/get out of the way could only parry the ball and it cannoned into the stumps with the highly unfortunate Timms stranded well out of his ground at the non-strikers end.
Timms departed for 60, much to the applause of his watching family and to the amusement of his teammates.
Partridge was joined by the big hitting Todd Saunders, who was also eyeing the short boundary on the duck pond side of the ground. Saunders was unusually restrained in his first few deliveries before being bowled for an unusual 0. Englefield had their tails up, but they hadn’t reckoned on The Frenzy being next man in. After a pep talk from his skipper, and after he’d extinguished his customary cigarette, The Frenzy played out the remainder of JD’s over to leave Partridge on Strike against Chinaman bowler Cheney.
Cheney had received a fair bit of tap from Barron and Timms in his earlier overs but his skipper must have sensed he was worthy of additional overs. His first ball was a loopy full toss that Partridge dispatched to the midwicket fence with some distain. The 3rd and 4th balls of the over were much the same with Partridge employing his favourite shot to identical results on both occasions.
The 5th ball of the over is where the farce was compounded though. Partridge stepping back to tickle on down to fine leg to pinch the strike, only succeeded on treading on the sticks to send the bails tumbling, much to his disgust and the delight of the Home team fielders. 2 unusual dismissals in the space of 2 overs. Both involving Partridge. The Telephone of the ICC anti-corruption unit could be heard ringing almost immediately.
With the prize wicket of the skipper under their belt, the home team must have fancied their chances of rattling through the Crows lower order. They hadn’t reckoned on Crows official photographer Pete Clarke and The Frenzy putting on a quick fire 50 partnership.
The Frenzy made his way to 24 before chipping a simple catch in the air, whilst Clarke (P) continued on his merry way with the able support of Beardy Gloveman PC Shilton as well as contributions from Jimmy-Jimmy and Duck Boy Monty.
Clarke perished for 38, his highest score in Crows Colours whilst Monty got off the mark with a 6 into the next postcode.
Crows had amassed 266-8 in 40 overs and hadn’t had to call on the services of The Calypso Kid to wield his bat.
The Tea break was well received with a fine selection of food, that pleased the pallets of the famished Crows. The now-well fed Crows took the field and Miller and Clarke (P) opened the bowling as usual. Crows fielded and bowled with an enthusiasm and desire that has set them apart from most opponents this season.
Clarke made the first breakthrough bowing Joe Van Der Merwe who had begun to look settled. Cheney was ticking along nicely at the other end and with plenty of wickets to play with Englefield were in the game but Miller and Clarke were bowling well and coupled with the tight fielding, the run rate soon began to climb.
Barron replaced Clarke(P) at the Polo players end and Clarke(S) replaced the wicketless Miller at the Nets end. Sean Tom Tom Clarke carried on where he had left off against the Ducks the week before and was soon in the wickets. He clean bowled keeper Woods whilst the Red Barron gunned down the dangerous Cheney, with Clarke (P) taking a stunning catch at mid-on, with the watching Club President suitably impressed I’m sure.
This bought youngster Dominic Lucey to the wicket to join his father and skipper John in the middle. Clarke(S) was in no mood for charity and set up young Dominic who prodded forward and popped a simple catch to the skipper in at silly mid off. He doesn’t miss those. The demise of young Dominic all got a bit too much for him and his disappointment was audible from the middle as he arrived back at the pavilion. Clarke (S)’s next victim was the prize wicket of Mr Angry, who perished for a duck, superbly caught by The Frenzy in the covers. Frenzy was mobbed by jubilant teammates as Angry trudged his way back to the pavilion, his face several shades of red darker than it was upon his arrival at the crease.
Barron bowled 6 overs before the skipper decided to turn his arm himself. Partridge claimed a wicket with his 3rd ball, Chalfont misreading the “Special Ball” and Hester taking a great catch behind the pegs to hang on to the top edge.
The very next ball, Steve Henry also misread “the special ball” and spooned a catch to a perfectly positioned Jimmy Jimmy at mid-off and all of a sudden Partridge was on a hattrick for the 2nd season in a row at this ground. However it was not to be as JD VDM managed to defend the hattrick ball. His stay of execution was short lived however has he had his off-stump dislodged with an in-swinging full-toss the very next ball.
At the other end Clarke (S) finished with 3-35 form 8 overs and was replaced by Saunders. MacKenzie replaced the skipper after 1 solitary triple wicket maiden.
The Englefield tail offered brief resistance with the big-hitting and imaginatively-named Paul Pizzey clubbing a quick fire 24 whilst John Lucey continued to farm the strike.
However the limping Pizzey attempted one quick run to many and was run out by the dead-eye combination of Carson and Saunders. This was made all the more remarkable by Carson’s previous attempt at fielding which cannoned into Clarke (S) from close range as he attempted to throw in from the boundary.
With Englefield miles behind the run-rate and the sun setting over Deer Park, Saunders summonsed up one last piece of magic, to bowl Lucey and wrap the match up and secure a 76 run win for the Crows to record their 9th victory of the season.
As the sun sets on a good season ,the Crows travel to Pirbright on Sunday hoping to finish off the season in style. A good team effort played in well documented good spirits and lots of effort from all concerned.
