Broadmoor Ducks v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Sunday XI on Sun 05 Sep 2010 at 1:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 66 Runs.

Match report Crows Sunday entered the final stretch of a long season with a comprehensive win over the depleted Broadmoor Ducks at a Rain and windswept Great Hollands Rec.

Ducks were missing several of their key players from recent years whilst Crows fielded a fairly strong team.

Crows won the toss and decided to Bat first on a typical-looking Great Hollands track. Openers Steve and Pete Northall, made immediate progress, with a flurry of boundaries coming in the opening overs.

Steve survived a scare early on, when the Ducks substitute fielder made a complete hash of an attempted catch, which resulted in the ball eventually going for 4. A lesson for every young cricketer of how not to do it.

The Brothers both looked comfortable with shots all round the wicket, with Pete showing the watching masses that his “switch-hit” was still a bit of “work-in-progress”. Both were to go on and pass 50 in good time and both were to eventually succumb to their one-time team mate Micky Gopie.

Their departure led to the entrance of skipper, Dave Shaw who, after a scratchy start, began to pepper the leg-side boundary as he has done so often. At the other end though, wickets fell at regular intervals. First, Rich Barron absolutely creamed a drive straight to short cover ,who took the catch of his life to send von Richthofen back to the Pavilion/BBQ without scoring.

Todd Saunders proved a useful ally for the captain for a while, but as the overs/time/patience ran out, so the wickets began to tumble.

Enter “Tony Bling” to the fray. Bling captured 6 Crows scalps in a devastating spell of bowling. He finished with 3-1-9-6 and ripped the heart out of the Crows Middle order.

Several of his victims could claim they fell foul of the game situation, but try telling that to Bling. Every wicket was celebrated like he’d won the lottery. Great scenes!

Ingram, Clarke (P) , Miller and The Frenzy could only muster 1 run between them. Whilst Clarke (S) and Carson remained unbeaten as the innings was bought to a somewhat premature end by the captain as the BBQ was ready!

After a fine tea consisting of some Fizzy pop, burgers, sausages, and several Caribbean delicacies that you have come to expect from the Ducks catering department over the years such as Jerk Chicken, Rice and Peas, pasta, and of course Frazzles, play resumed with Ducks chasing 180 to win in 27/30/40 overs (depending on who you asked)

Skipper Gopie strode to the crease with his henchman and chief BBQ chef Neil Ragoobar.
The Chef was soon on his way back to turn the burgers as Miller got a bit of movement and pegged back his off pole without troubling the well fed and slightly cold Scorer.

Mickey and Riz then set about the Crows Attack, taking a liking to the bowling of Miller and Clarke (P), however, Clarke (P) was to have the last laugh of this contest having Riz caught by Dave Shaw for 28. Riz had already incurred the wrath of his skipper and teammates alike by running out Gopie for 20.

As these wickets fell, so did the run-rate and soon the Ducks were well behind the 8-ball.
Each of the bowlers snared 1-victim each, except Barron who was wicketless and Clarke (S) who got 2. MacKenzie’s wicket was the pick of the lot, if only for the wild celebration! There were catches for Carson, Shaw, Steve and 2 stumpings for Steve on his first outing behind the stumps for the Crows.

Sean, playing against his work colleagues, former teammates and friends, was an inspired choice by Shaw to finish off the Ducks. He got rid of Ducks stalwart Tony McDowell and then had “Fred” stumped by stand-in keeper Steve Northall for a golden duck.
Clarke’s magic arm almost bought him a hattrick as last man Shivan Gopie edged over the slips from the last ball of the match.

The Crows had triumphed over The Ducks in the “RG45 Derby” for the 2nd year running and both sets of players retired to the balcony for post-match food, beers and the presentation. After a tear-jerking speech from both captains, it was deemed that Tony Bling was “Man of the match” and he received a magnum of Verve Cliquet* for his efforts

Thanks to the Ducks and Neil in particular for organizing the match. We look forward to next year!
