Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI v Ruislip Victoria on Sat 29 Aug 2015 at 1:00 pm
Match was Drawn (winning draw)

Match report Crowthorne & Crown Wood CC 1st XI welcomed Ruislip Victoria 1st XI to St. Sebastians for the last league game of the season, yet with honours to play for - CCWCC aiming to cement second place and RV needing to stave off relegation. In the end both happened - the game was brought to a close for bad light and rain - but the winning draw for CCWCC was enough to seal second place and RV indebted to other results going their way, meaning they also survive their first season in the Premier Division.

RV won the toss and invited CCWCC to bat on a damp wicket. The elders of CWCC had devised a plan and a change to the batting order - in at opener came Rob Crook, usually a lower order batsmen of sound technique. It started well with the skipper Ant Cluett and Rob playing very well on a popping wicket, Rob in particular going straight and aerial. Cluett was out on a well-made 16, bringing the recent holidayed Nick Outram to the crease. Together with Rob the two put on 120 for the second wicket and forcing RV to go defensive for all of the innings. Rob continued to blast the ball all around the ground, hitting four sixes, each in a different area of the ground. Nearing his maiden league hundred, he managed to middle one straight to cover where the catch was taken one-handed to deny Rob his ton. It was the most unexpected and entertaining innings of the CCWCC 1st XI season (with a nod to Rich Barron's 155 at Woodley). Nick was steadily accumulating and was finally out stumped for a strong 78. There was time for Alex Sykes (31) to win the CCWCC batting prize (the opposition probably puzzled when Sykes got to 10 and was roundly applauded) before a rain interruption brought tea. After the sumptuous feast (Ravi's wraps, and Rachel Crook's cakes!) CCWCC batted for three more overs before the innings closed on 244-6.

Jeff Cluett and Alex Sykes opened the bowling for CCWCC and immediately got a reward with one keeping low to bowl Kapoor. Siddique was stunningly caught by one handed by a diving Rob Crook at slip, to enhance what was already a great game for him. Jeff Cluett bowled maiden number 48 of the season but couldn't manage the half century, the RV batsmen aggressive in their single taking. With Ansari departing to Sykes, RV counter attacked with Neil Booth. He hit the ball powerfully and reached a fine 50, but on the way lost three partners to the evergreen Ravi Godbole. The batsmen never came to terms with the veteran's bowling and sound catching by CCWCC meant that after 20 overs, the match was "live" and RV were struggling. Booth went to a good catch from Dave Shaw on the boundary. But news came from the boundary that Mortimer West End had lost to BCS and RV were safe, and 2 overs later the umpires decided the light was insufficient to continue, leaving RV on 86-7.

The CCWCC after match party was a celebration for the three teams: The 1st XI surpassing all expectations and finishing runners-up in the Premier Division; The 2nd XI avoiding relegation from Div 2; and the 3rd XI having their best season and even winning a few games this year! It has been a great year for the newly-merged club and each season goes from strength to strength. A long winter of anticipation is now forthcoming!
