Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 134 runs

Match report Crows crash to catastrophic collapse.

Mackenzie won the toss and decided to field. Great opening spells from Sykes and Jeff went mostly unrewarded as a succession of chances went down, balls were skied into gaps, and the ball beat the bat over and over again. But the two openers hung around for 12 overs, and though Cluett eventually took the 1st wicket, that only brought the more expansive law to the crease. The batsmen opened up, throwing the bat and riding their luck as the bowlers shook off their early season rustiness, 3 catches were put down and the Crows would regret those missed chances later on.
Kally was approaching his Ton, and Law got his 50 before the skipper, Mackenzie, took matters into his own hands and brought himself onto bowl. Bamboozling the batsmen with a brilliant mix of slow loopy non spinning spin bowling, and slightly quicker and less loopy non spinning spin bowling, he took three wickets, including kally on 89, and law on 61 in two balls, prompting questions about why he hadn't bowled sooner. Billy 'the kid' Coles took a wicket with his first ball, and had two more catches dropped, but it was too little too late, and the damage had already been done.
the big tea didn't seem to slow the phoenix bowling down much. Rowdy, who finished with figures of 5 for 19 off 5 overs, ripped through the batting order, bowling quickly and bending it round corners. The economical Girdeep at the other end took 2 for 4 off 8 overs, as the Crows collapsed to 44 for 8 off just 12 overs. Gutsy rear guard batting from Sykes and Cluett made things look slightly more respectable, but Sykes went for 19, and when Coles was stumped after playing a couple of nice shots it was all over, with the crows skittled for 98, leaving Cluett stranded on 36 not out.

Speaking to the press after his first game as permanent Sunday skipper, Mackenzie took the responsibility for the defeat, 'It's not the result I was hoping for, and maybe my inexperience cost us a bit in the field, leaving us facing a big total. That put pressure on the batsmen from the off, which we didn't deal with very well.' After praise for his spell with the ball, Mackenzie responded modestly,'Yes my bowling was brilliant, but its about the team, and I'd exchange every wicket I took for the win. I hope to be able to put things right next week'
