Match report CROWS SPANK PETULANT PEPPARD

A fairly comical start to the game, as first some Crows players ended up at the wrong ground and then mixed signals meant the start time was under debate. With the CCW players thinking it started at 13.30 and the Peppard players believing it was 13.00 – a happy medium was reached and the battle began at 13.20.
Captain Cluett (Junior) continued his good tossing form and had no hesitation in sticking Peppard in to bat.
Jaffa kicked off with an obligatory maiden over and Raz started well from the other end. However, the Peppard openers seemed to be finding their feet and the score rocketed along. Jeff got unceremoniously dispatched for 20 in his 3rd over. This would have knocked any normal man’s confidence, but this is not a normal man we are talking about and this setback seemed to only strengthen his resolve. Captain courageous steamed in and found the edge, which was pouched by a disbelieving Barron at first slip. (It must be remembered that Barron hasn’t caught anything since the flu in August last year). This seemed to stir the Crows into action and Raz bowled the other opener in the very next over. This was a big wicket as this particular batsman was looking dangerous and was an excellent driver of the ball – as he was to remind us during pretty much the whole of our innings.
Some bizarre batting followed, as every batsman that came in seemed to want to hit every ball for six. Raz took a very good catch off a Jaffa bouncer and the Crows knew that they had a very good chance of restricting a strong Peppard batting line up to a fairly measly total. With whispers of ‘turn on the kettle’ and ‘get the teabag ready’, Sin ‘Earl Grey’ Chandran entered the fray. He struck almost straight away, with the help of a superb catch from the Colonel. This catch seemed to remind Cluett Junior that Cluett Senior was playing as he was immediately rewarded with a bowling spell. With the Colonel and Earl Grey bowling well the runs dried up and desperation seemed to creep into the Peppard innings. Packed full of protein powder and bristling with testosterone, the Peppard number 6 walked to the crease looking like he meant business. Unfortunately for him, after scratching around for a couple of deliveries, he was undone by an ‘Allwright special’ and was stumped. Wickets continued to tumble and although there was a period of consolidation from the Peppard team, they were finding runs hard to come by. Ravi ‘ the sungod’ Godbole was brought on to bowl and any hopes of a Peppard revival were quashed. Ravs bowled with excellent control and accuracy and showed exactly why he has 590 odd wickets to his name. Chris took another good catch behind the stumps and Nikunj got in on the action, pouching a lofted drive at mid on. A special mention must go to Rajesh who also bowled beautifully. He didn’t get a wicket but bowled with pace and swing, which was a bit too much for the Peppard lower order to manage. Unfortunately we couldn’t take the last Peppard wicket but went into tea feeling very confident about reaching the required 167.
With tea done and dusted – the Judge and the Colonel strolled resolutely out to the middle. Peppard has decided to take the old ball and started off with spin from both ends.
Both openers started off solidly, with the Judge in particular looking like he was picking up from where he left off last week. Unfortunately he was undone by a straight one and was given out LBW. Barron strode to the crease on the back of a run of two ducks – vowing to give up cricket if he got another. Fortunately he got off the mark and prolonged his career by at least another season. It was decided that Barron would play the more attacking role with the Colonel trying to rotate the strike. This tactic was working quite well and the Peppard fielders were getting more frustrated with every over. There was a bit of ‘chat’ from the fielders, with some particularly irritating comments coming from the man who had contributed a massive 0 runs to his teams total. The new ball was taken and the ‘ Brett Lee’ of the Peppard side stormed in. I use this name loosely as this was an honour he bestowed on himself – with comments like ‘I am too quick for the top order’. Looking at the bowling figures, this was hardly the case. He also offered to give Barron a lesson in how to drive the ball, which is a fair call but maybe some of that time should be spent practising his forward defensive.
Barron was undone shortly after that, trying to hook a ball that was far too full. The phrase ‘cometh the hour, cometh the man’ has never rung more true as DC strode to the crease. What followed was a joy to behold. The goblet found his timing from the first ball and never looked back. With the reliable Ant at one end and the extravagant DC at the other – Peppard did not get another look in. It was great to see all the hard work Dan had put into his cricket bearing fruit. He played a masterful innings which included some lovely drives and some brutal hooks and pulls, one which ended up in the clubhouse. Ant’s contribution shouldn’t be overlooked, he batted with resolve and resilience, which was just what we needed. Together these two managed to ease us over the line with overs to spare. A great team performance and Captain Cluett, although reserved about the victory, was bristling with pride. Ravi Godbole was also heard to comment that this was one of the most satisfying wins of his career, quite a statement from a man who has spent more than half his life on a cricket field. Well done chaps! A great performance by all!
