Match report Rain Ruins Run-Fest at St Sebs

Mackenzie won the toss and elected to bat on a green damp wicket in overcast and muggy conditions.

O'Loughlin and Allwright put on 37 for the first wicket, and when Allwright was stumped (as he danced down the wicket and completely missed the ball) last weeks hero, Dan Crinnion came to the crease, pushed up the order and given a chance to cement his reputation as a genuine all-rounder against some decent bowling. It was a chance he didn't pass up, putting on 58 runs with the skipper, Mackenzie, and 49 with Cartledge (30*) and eventually fell for 66, his second 50 in two games. Crinnions wicket only brought Brundish to the crease, and he and cartledge, battling it out for the sunday batting prize, put on another 69 run in the last 9 overs, including 3 massive 6s off the last 3 balls from Brundish (45*) to stretch his lead even further. Crows finished on 218 off their 40 overs and looked well in control.

BBC Caversham had other ideas, however, as the dangerous Vital went after the opening bowlers, especially the wayward Brundish, who blotted his copy-book after the earlier batting heroics, going for 30 runs off only 4 overs and putting himself out of contention for the Sunday bowling prize. Crinnion took a wicket at the other end in a tidy spell and as the rain started to fall, the damp fielders looked miserably to their captain to take them off, but he refused, keeping everyone out there for 30 minutes longer in the pouring rain, desperate for the win. Eventually it became untenable though, they came off, and the opposition captain couldn't abandon the game quickly enough.

A disappointed Mackenzie spoke to the press after the game, saying, 'I'm gutted to be honest. I always thought we would win that game, and the way we batted deserved it. Crinnion, Cartledge and Brundish were brilliant as usual, and if the rain had held off I have every faith that my bowlers would have taken the wickets eventually.' He also Paid tribute to Mcdowell MBE, 'Tony was amazing out there today, his 40 over umpiring stint was epic in proportion, and he puts some of the younger players to shame with his stamina.'
