Match report PURLEY GATES REMAIN CLOSED FOR UNDERMANNED CROWS

An under-strength Crowthorne 2nd XI fell to a strong Purley side at a sun-drenched IBIS sports club.

Winning the toss, Crowthorne skipper Sheppard elected to bowl on a damp but drying pitch. With one man withdrawing shortly before play due to an unscheduled trip to the vets and Smokin Joe Davies only around for half a game, the prospect of fielding with 9 men meant taking first use of the ball seemed the best otption.

Crows started brightly with the ever accurate Monty Miller swinging the new cherry, and soon enough the hard hitting Denton feathered behind. Clarke followed in short order off the bowling of Long, and when Sheppard took a worldy of a low catch in front of slip to dismiss Roach, Crowthorne fancied they might restrict Purley to something chaseable.

Davies replaced Monty at the pavilion end, promptly dismissing Singh with his antipodian brand of leg-spin; a delighted McDowell with the slip catch to dismiss his fellow Trinidadian.

The game took a turn for the worse from Crows point of view as the dogged skipper Mugford was joined by young J Denton. Both batsmen made their way to 50 and beyond, setting a very tough 220 for Crows to chase down.

Joe Davies was sent out to smash as many as possible before having to leave for his shift at the local Australian theme pub. Davies started brightly before falling to the swinging ball of Holman. Sheppard and Huelin on his league debut came and went without troubling the scorers too much, and when the classy looking Miller fell softly to Denton (K), it was time for Tony and Jimmy to dig in for the draw.

Dig in they did, so deeply entrenched the Purley fielders were soon losing the will to live as the master blockers played out maiden after maiden to the clear amusement of the umpiring skipper, but not the Purley fieldsmen.

The mammoth stand of McDowell was finally ended somewhere around the 32nd over, trapped in front of the wicket for 8 hard won runs. Jimmy kept up the fight for Crowthorne's proud unbeaten record with an excellent 12 run innings off probably twice that in overs.

Unfortunately the weakened Crows line up could not hold on for the draw, young debutant Jack Montague the last man out with 42.4 overs on the board. The depleted Cowthorne team outplayed by the better side, but not out-fought.
