Pinkneys Green v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Sunday XI on Sun 28 Apr 2013 at 2:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Tom Nash's debut as Sunday skipper ended in a crushing victory for Crowthorne at a distinctly chilly Pinkneys Green.

Winning the toss and opting to bowl on a green and used pitch, skipper Nash instructed the tried and tested opening partnership of Miller and Clarke (P) to fight for the choice of ends. Much to the disappointment of the gathered fielders no brawl took place as the two protagonists ignored the clear instructions of their captain, and instead cordially agreed that Clarke would open from the pavilion end.

Picking up where he left off last week Clarke soon had Heyes bowled, with the ball trickling onto the stumps whilst the bowler considered an appeal for LBW. Monty promptly got in on the act by bowling the other opener Fuller; with a yorker ironically. Monty's bowling was as tight as we have come to expect from the swing-master, and he was unlucky not to pick up another wicket when MacKenzie spilled a skyer at gully. With figures of 3-34 for Clarke and 1-8 for Miller, the opening pair had bowled their alloted 16 overs exceptionally and Crows had a match-winning platform.

Replacing Miller at the road end, Brendon 'The Frenzy' MacKenzie made up for his slippery fingered caper and bowled Hendry with his first ball, beautifully clipping the top of off-stump. The Frenzy proceeded to bowl his best spell for the club, his flight and accuracy troubling the Pinks middle order with every ball. He was unlucky not to pick up another wicket in his final over as Sheppard spilled a regulation drive to mid-on. Meanwhile up the other end Saviour himself was unlucky when McDowell (R) shelled a tough ball lasered to his midriff at backward point.

Skipper Nash thought he better bring McDowell (T) into the attack before the veteran from sunnier climes lost all feeling in his frozen limbs. Tony's figures of 4 for 14 reflected his mastery of flight, guile and no little spin; a combination the Green's lower order were ill equipped to deal with. Pinkneys' dangerman Snapes was dismissed by a sharp catch above his head by MacKenzie at cover, who much like Andy Cole looked a different player when poaching a chance he didn't have time to think about.

Meanwhile Garrett, bowling up the other end, was unlucky to have an edge dropped by both McDowell (T) at slip and Barron behind the stumps on the same ball. He was also left cursing Lady Luck when Barron juggled another edge like a cartoon cat with a stack of plates. Perhaps his biggest unluck of all was a caught and bowled chance which he tipped away like a goalkeeper over the bar, followed the very next ball by a caught and bowled chance which was parried to the ground like a goalkeeper neither clearing his lines nor clutching the ball to his chest.

Pinkneys' innings ended with the run out of the clumsy Hann, who failed to run his bat in and neatly summised the home side's efforts with the willow.

The hosts turn at hurling the leather was kicked off by the sprightly young'un Purchase; he couldn't buy a wicket, but he did ask questions of the openers Barron and McDowell (R) before bizarrely being withdrawn after 3 overs in favour of a succession of ageing pie-chuckers.

Barron, looking like a three-eyed man in the kingdom of the blind, picked up his second 50 in as many weeks before being stumped off the extraordinary bowling of Harden. Harden lobbed the ball so slow and high that the Barron was already in the bar ordering a cold brewski by the time the keeper whipped the bails off. Prior to Barron's walkabout, McDowell and Shaw had fallen to the old Crowthorne disease of trying to launch the pie-chuckers into orbit, and it was left to O'Clarke and Sheppard see the Crows over the finish line and into the warm hutch.
