Match report CROWS GET OFF TO FLYER AS CHALMERS BROTHERS TEAR MWE APART

Crowthorne started their 2012 league season with a comfortable win against MWE.

Crows started the game without skipper Mark Knight but still fielded a strong team with no less that than 5 new faces from last season's squad.

Batting first having lost the toss, Ant Cluett and Simon Sheppard looked to get the Crows off to a steady start. Having almost seen off the opening bowlers, Cluett fell after a patient 14, unluckily playing on. Sheppard held firm at the other end to craft a solid 49 before feathering an under edge to the keeper and Steve Northall was looking in fine form before being trapped plumb leg before for 32.

However with plenty of batting still to come the Crows looked to have a solid platform to post a decent total. Ricky McDowell and Mehul Patel shared an unbeaten stand of 78 to steer the Crows to a total of 210/5. Debutant McDowell hit a steady 36 not out whilst Patel blasted his way to 52 not out at the other end with 2 huge sixes out of the ground.

The Crows came out after tea fired up and stand-in skipper Ross Chalmers looked at the conditions and decided to keep the old ball in an attempt to weedle out a couple of early wickets. This plan backfired immediately as the openers took a liking to the bowling with some cavalier shots. This experiment lasted a mere 4 overs before Jeff Cluett and Chalmers himself took the new ball.

Chalmers put in a real captain's performance destroying the top order with a superb display of bowling. At the other end Cluett was almost unplayable but for no reward. Chalmers took 4/12 and his brother Mike, making his first Crows appearance for 4 years after a spell playing overseas weighed in with 3 wickets with his well-flighted leg-spinners.

MWE crumbled and it was left to Dan Partridge and Ant Cluett to clean up the tail. Partridge benefiting from debutant Joe Davies' fine diving catch at mid off. Crows won by 84 runs and got the positive start to the season that Knight had asked for.

Stand-in skipper Ross Chalmers : "This was a very efficient team performance with everyone chipping in. We had a lot of new faces out there and they all played their part. We'll be looking to build on this next week at Waltham
St Lawrence. We batted well, held our catches and our bowling unit all bowled well. It's a good start but there's definitely more to come from us."
