Match report CROWS DEFEAT IBIS IN ST SEBS CLASSIC

Absent captain W. Avrili was hardly missed on a sunny afternoon in Crowthorne, as superb keeper-batsman understudy Fitzroy Morrissey combined with stand-in skipper J. Cluett to overshadow their missing leader. Mayor of Crowthorne Dan Partridge also starred in a tense finish, claiming 3-13 to wrap up an excellent win.

Batting first, the Crows were creaking at 8-2, before a timely partnership between Marv (23) and Ganes (13) steadied the ship, CCWCC passing the 50 mark after 16 overs. Both perished in quick succession, leaving Fitz and Jaffa to do the heavy lifting on a sweltering afternoon. Long boundaries and a slow outfield meant that they knew 175 would be a par score...and it also meant a LOT of running between the wickets. Relying on deftness, placement and their natural fitness, the pair combined for a crucial 81 partnership featuring only four boundaries. Fitz eventually fell for a superb 57 on his first team debut, and Jaffa ultimately remained unbeaten on 41* as he shepherded the team to a very competitive 180 at tea.

The Duchess of Sussex and the returning Timi Malik took the new ball, immediately putting the pressure on the Ibis top order with two early wickets. Runs did continue to flow for a very competent Ibis top order, and the pendulum kept swinging throughout the first 35 overs of a tense run-chase. Eventually it was untimely wickets that proved to be the undoing of a game Ibis, and in particular an eye-catching spell of 9-2-26-3 from captain Cluett took the wind out of the Ibis sails. Marv also played a vital part in the field, running out the dangerous Drury for 35 with a direct hit. It fell to tail-polisher-in-chief Dan Partridge to deliver the coup-de-grace, though, spinning his side to the brink of victory with 3 wickets in 7 brilliant overs. The returning Chris Emes took the final wicket, skittling the Ibis number 11 and sparking joyous scenes amongst the Crows faithful.

A thoughtful Jaffa was caught by local press after the game, commenting: "I thought we would struggle today without a few of our regulars, but I needn't have worried. All of the boys stepped up when called upon, and helped me win us this game. It was a genuine all-round performance, and the other ten lads did ok too."
