Match report No Points Crying Over Spilt Mankad by The Hurricane

It was a grey afternoon at the North Face Recreation Ground in Warfield and the fresh white boundary paint was proudly delineating a quirky, quadrilateral playing area. As the players clambered up to the square from the clubhouse, they were struck by the bucolic beauty of the diverse flora and rhythmic corrugation of the playing surface.

A loud, strong, confident call of, “heads” from the ebullient Crows Captain secured the first victory of the afternoon and his gallant charges took to the field. Loving praise of the outswing prowess of Grime Rapper Crinnerz and an understated gesture towards the longer offside boundary up the hill brought the skipper his second small victory of the afternoon as his youthful opening partner asked if he could please bowl up the hill. GRC took no time in putting his shapely balls to good use; sending Warfield’s first combatant back to barracks with a cunning long hop that our square leg specialist gobbled up in trademark reptilian fashion. The skipper rolled down the hill and rolled back the years as he unleashed his devastating quicker balls - alas neither the batsman nor the immaculate keeper, Saviour, noticed any difference.

The other Warfield opener was going better than a number of his subsequent partners and was cleverly circumventing the friction of the North Bracknell savannah whilst also being careful not to disturb the snoozing Crows who had been put out to pasture. Fortunately, amidst a blistering spell of swing bowling, Ravioli Paul had his own cunning plan. He spied the Warfield opener doing an impression of Usain Bolt at the Daegu World Championships and aborted his bowling approach, held the ball next to the stumps and warned the non-striking batsman.

Two balls later, our very own Vinoo sparked scenes as he followed through on his Mankad threat. The batsman didn't want to go and the umpire summoned the skipper from fine leg to appeal for clemency. “Was he warned?”, “Did the batsman understand?”, “Was it out?”: three affirmatives and so the decision was left to the Warfield club umpire, who ushered the batsman back to base camp amidst a confetti of rule book pages being furiously thumbed by the home bench. One in particular appeared to be severely traumatized by this crime against humanity.

The rest of the innings passed less eventfully as an even tussle between Warfield’s waggy tail and Bainesy brought both regular runs and wickets. The highlight of the closing overs was Gnasher's audition for Strictly as he completed a slow motion double pirouette to pouch a skyer in a rare posting to the covers. Warfield finished with a respectable but less than sparkling 153 all out.

A strong-looking Crows batting lineup got off to a solid start with The Judge reforming the club’s most dependable opening act. His partner Tom ‘Gnasher’ Nash was in fiery form as he tangled with the traumatized Warfieldian. With our batsman running for two and Warfield's fine leg groping around under the sightscreen for the ball, the umpire signaled four. Despite the ball being dead, the piqued bowler tried to run the now strolling Gnasher out. The Crows stopper showed both commendable restraint and authority as he sent him back to his mark. The poor little bowler was inconsolable and the umpire rescinded the boundary decision to prevent him from further dampening the track with his tears.

With Tom’s adrenaline still high, he soon contrived a classic, comic, yes/no set piece. No fear though as racy twenty-odds from Nikunj and a reassuringly hungover Barrymore ably supported an imperious 68 from The Judge and Crows cruised home with 7 wickets and 9 overs to spare. A patient start and lusty acceleration culminated in a double record for the 2nd XI returner: highest league score for the club and career first stumped dismissal.

And that should've been that… but battle recommenced in the handshake line, outside the changing rooms and then again outside the bar as Warfield's Sportsmanship Ambassador shared the earth-shattering news that he would never, ever play for Crows. Still reeling from the sharp disappointment of his rebuffal of the imagined transfer request, we were further wounded by his unilateral cancellation of all future friendly fixtures between the clubs. Still chuntering, he finally headed for the car park (perhaps to inspect the spot where Barrymore had deposited several of his balls in his final over) and the adults from both sides were left in peace to share an amicable post-match pint.
