Match report The Miracle on Vine Street

Saturday saw the long anticipated start of the cricket season for CCWCC with a long away day to Ruislip. The day got off to a bad start with 3 of the teams high value players being caught out by irresponsible M3 closure. However, as the clock struck 1(pm), the team was at full capacity and raring to go. A Cluett, having stood down as Skipper stood back up and, in tried and tested fashion, tactically lost the toss once again, and Crows were put into the field. At first glance it looked to be an absolute road of a pitch.

Crows struck early as the Ruislip innings got off to a stuttering start with ‘Raz al Ghul’ putting in some cracking deliveries and making the breakthrough. He cunningly set up the batsman with a wild leg side delivery expertly taken by the ‘Talisman’ Avrili. The trap was set. With pinpoint accuracy, the next delivery was eased closer to the leg stump luring the batsman into a hopeful leg flick only for those hopes to be shattered by the salmonesque leap of the ‘Talisman’.

A steady partnership was forming for Ruislip which kept the Crows on their toes but spirits never dropped on a pitch that was oozing with runs. The crows batsman where becoming more and more excited as the opposition innings went on and the score mounted(!?!). Wicket’s were falling at regular intervals. A.Cluett took advantage of captaining the side to bowl for the majority of the innings, even overheard muttering to himself over and over ‘this is my only chance to captain, I’m going to make the most of it’. However, 4 wickets later, including the prize scalp of their big hitting number 3 and helped by some great fielding in the deep no one could argue with his decision. Through the tears from Spurs’ defeat the previous evening Dan ‘Crinnerz’ Crinnion managed to bowl some steady line and length which can only have been helped by the encouragement from his team mates. The Huq, bouncing off Avrili’s banter, settled the boy down with some soothing words “That's down the dele alli of uncertainty let's get him out and vertongone ". At the close of the innings the hosts had managed to post an intimidating 275.

This was a score that all but Brundish believed we could chase. He sat down at tea, not eating anything, and dejectedly said ‘Only a miracle from God can get us back from here’.

With such a motivational pep talk ringing in their ears, and Starship’s classic song ‘Nothings gonna stop us now’ winding its way through the air, the openers went out to bat. And then they were back. With several wickets falling early, the Huq’s prophecy looked to be fast becoming reality. However, enter Shakeel Arshad stage left, head held high, purposefully striding out to the middle. What followed can only be described as a masterclass, poetry in motion. Dealing in 4s, 23 of them to be precise, Shak took the game by the knackers and squeezed, the bowlers were in disarray knowing not what to do. He was well supported by D “Run Machine” C, who most uncharacteristically found himself the passenger, watching from the non-strikers end. Shak’s innings ended when he was trapped LBW for 108 but he had set a formidable foundation for those following to finish the job. It was now the turn of The Goblet to join DC and continue the accumulation of runs before DC’s majestic 57 came to an end. The stage was set for an exciting finish, as Will ‘The Talisman’ Avrili walked onto the playing surface the run rate was up at 6 an over. Avrili and The Goblet knew that now was the time to strike and wrap things up. Some classy strokes from both players saw a partnership similar to Morecambe and Wise, Batman and Robin or Spongebob and Patrick. When The Goblet ((31) was beaten by a snorter of a delivery that made it through the brick wall defence it was left to Mudzy (14) and Avrili(44) to steer the Crows to victory. The Miracle had come to pass.

A brilliant performance by the whole team, great intensity, team spirit and class on show throughout. Well done to all those who participated in the ‘Miracle on Vine Street’ it will be sure to go down in the Crows history books!
