Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club League 1st XI v Sulhamstead & Ufton on Sat 16 May 2015 at 1:30 pm
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 66 runs

Match report An injury to CCWCC bowler Angus Murray marred this game, which in the end S&U 1st XI won by bowling out CCWCC in the 43rd over of their innings.

Skipper Anthony Cluett won the toss and invited S&U to bat on a pitch still showing some dampness from rain earlier in the week. Jeff Cluett took the first wicket, that of the dangerous Jamie Seward, as he top edged to the wicket keeper. Marc Thompson hit one beautiful cover drive before becoming Cluett's next victim with an edge through to the wicket keeper. Runs were very hard to come by and CCWCC well on top when the opening spells of bowlers of Ashley Fowles and Cluett were done. But an injury to tall Aussie pacer Murray changed the game when Mercer drove the ball back into Murray's "delicate" region. Murray required hospitalisation, and CCWCC were down to nine men as his mentor Richard Barron took on ambulance duties. Despite being down to nine, CCWCC ground fielding and bowling was excellent. Mercer was run out for 32, looking good, in pursuit of runs. Anthony Cluett and Shakeel Arshad bowled very tidy spells, Arshad particularly unlucky as a total of nine catches were put down. Aaron Briggs was the main beneficiary as he took advantage of the CCWCC profligacy to score a defiant 79*, carrying his bat. Palmer and Gill hit some lusty blows to end S&U's innings with a total of 187.

With regular opener Barron absent, CCWCC seemed to be adversely affected by the absence, and threw wickets away in a chase that should have been obtainable. Arshad went to a swinging delivery from Godfrey, captain Cluett an uncharacteristic swipe to Palmer. Godbole left a Thompson delivery that span into middle stump and Outram failed to clear the boundary fielder in a lusty 32. The middle order and tail tried to occupy the crease but it was left to Chris Allwright and Fowles to battle for the draw. Allwright hit a monster six but fell trying the same shot. Barron returned from ambulance duty and looked comfortable with Fowles, and together they survived 5 tense overs until Godfrey returned to end Fowles' watchful vigil in the 43rd over by somehow bowling him round his pads.

Murray is recovering and hopefully no permanent damage is done. CCWCC will take positives from the game and move forward as they continue their learning at this level of competition.
