Thanks to some hard work, innovation and inter-club spirit, a game that looked like an obvious cancellation actually went ahead. When C&CWCC arrived at the ground we found a small lake at the pavilion side of the Reading University Ground, and several West Reading players ankle deep in the middle of it bailing out water into buckets and off-loading them beyond the boundary! The need for industry was recognised and both teams waded in to clear the puddle. In around an hour the puddle had been reduced in size, enough to rope off an area, and allow the game to start late. After a couple of pitch inspections the game went ahead as a reduced 33 over game.

West Reading won the toss and bowled. Impressive batting from Nick Outram and Joe Davies moved C&CWCC to 96-1, but the middle order crumbled to good fast bowling from Amaar Raja (4-29). Jabraan Ahmed (5-49) found wickets too, and injudicious shots from the normally solid C&CWCC team meant the final score of 154 all out was just about par, when a much better score was in prospect. Riyas Rajab's 22 runs at the tail were invaluable.

West Reading took on the score but wickets fell regularly, aided by some amazing catches behind the wicket. A big stand between Taskeen Ahmed (48), who batted beautifully, and Younus Khan (14), was broken and C&CWCC went for the kill, only to come up one wicket short. A dropped catch when WR were 8 down possibly being a 'match-drawing' drop! (Mea culpa! )

Massive thanks to Usman and his players for the endeavour showed to get the game on. Some players had been there since 10am - the game started at 3pm, meaning they had been working hard for 5 hours before the game. The match was played in great spirit and in my mind was an advert for what the BCL aspires to.
