Sonning 4 v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 08 Jun 2013 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 70 runs

Match report The Seconds were at sunny Sonning on Saturday. [Too many ‘S’ words – ed.] This was an important match – OK, they’re all important, but Crowthorne were lying third in the table before play, with Sonning not far off the leading pack.

It was a warm day, complete with flat track, fast outfield and short boundaries. Conditions were made for batting. With Monty the only fit seamer in the Crowthorne side, the ideal scenario was for us to bat first and put pressure on Sonning by posting a large total. That would give us some runs to play with when rotating our battery of slow bowlers.

The plan worked like a dream. It’s tempting to say ‘wet dream’, but that would have been last year. [Keep it clean – ed.]. We won the toss and the batsmen duly delivered, with classy fifties from Junior Stent and Nick McDonagh and a brutal 43 from Dave ‘Swashbuckle’ Shaw seeing Crowthorne to 248. It should have been nearer 300, but apart from a handy 20 from Tim Garrett, the middle order wilted in the sun and we were bowled out in 42 overs.

No matter. The Crows were in charge. We kept the old ball and took all the pace off it by opening up with the slowest bowler on either side, Tony McDowell. Bemused by the wily old fox’s mesmerising line and length – and the ball’s apparent failure to arrive – catches duly went up (in some cases down) and wickets fell steadily. With Tony taking the first three (4 for 30 in all), it was over to Ant Avrili to spin a web of his own. Bowling with a cool head when under attack from Sonning’s aggressive batsmen, he ended with 5 for 50, ably supported by excellent catches by Swashbuckle (2) and McDonagh. Monty’s fine effort as our lone seamer should not go unmentioned, giving us control when we needed it and also picking up an important wicket.

Sonning succumbed swiftly [‘S’s again – ed.] all out in 36 overs for 178, and handing the Crows maximum points.

A superb team effort from the Crows, with fantastic spirit in the side.
