Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 2nd XI v Sulhamstead & Ufton 3 on Sat 18 May 2013 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 120 runs

Match report A great team performance took Crows 2nd XI to their first ever win, and keeps their unbeaten start to the season.

It was a glorious day at the Great Hollands Oval, the sun was out, and the out field nicely trimmed. Skipper Sheppard strolled out to toss the coin, and duly lost again, and was put into bat again. Sulhamstead and Ufton obviously having not seen our last match result.

Sheppard went out to face the first ball, with Leach at his side. All started well, the pair put on 28. But then Leach's mild attempt got a nick on the ball and easily snaffled by the keeper.

Avrili went out, but didn't last long. Then was the return of an old face, Robin Stent had returned, and it was clear after a few balls, he hadn't lost any of his batting ability. Though his partnership with the skipper didn't last long before Sheppard was caught by possibly the biggest hands ever seen on a cricket pitch, proportionately the ball literally was like a cherry to these hands.

Shaw strode out with Jimmy's challenge in his head (last more than 6 balls). Shaw did more than that, and with Stent put on an 82 partnership. Great work. Finally falling for a good knock of 36.

Out went Clarke with potatoes in his ears, often missing the calls. Stent one time running fully to the other end where Clarke had his full weight lent on his bat, only for Stent to have to run all the way back again for no run. But though Clarke was exhausted and often troubled by the second run due to over-throws, he contributed a valued 21 runs, and take us to full batting points for the second time this season.

Stent still steady at the other end got his 50, then saw 3 partners fall. First Clarke leg before, then Utterson (on his debut) run out, and Miller short lived before being clean bowled in the penultimate over. McDowell saw out the last over, and didn't have to come off for new pants.

Crows had set a good total of 198 for 7, Stent had hit 70 not out on his return. Crows Twos remain not out this season, having hit over 400 runs. Time for tea, then attack.

Stent went keeper to give Sheppard a go with the ball. A couple of lapse balls led to byes, that Jimmy has arranged to be added to Sheppard's figures. But still Sheppard was very tight, taking 3 wickets for only 5 runs off 8 overs.

But it was Miller that took the first wicket, and a really important one. He trapped the opener leg before in his second over, and that was the start of Crows Twos run to victory.

Sheppard took a quick two wickets, and S+U were on 12 for 3. Then another Sheppard wicket left them on 22 for 4. Sheppard had Si-thed (scythed) them down. Sheppard and Miller then took a break, for Avrili and Leach to take the attack.

S+U put on 30 quickly. Protecting the weaker batsman, S+U managed to get a few lucky strikes and thought they were getting back into it. Then Avrili dismissed the better batsman, totally deceiving him and knocking the bails off.

Back to Leach. He'd peppered them for a few overs, but just wasn't hitting the pegs. With Jimmy chirping away in his ear between every ball, he'd finally had enough, put it right on the pegs, the batsman could only hope the white of his pads would blind the umpire from the plumb call.

Leach had his wicket. That opened the gates. Another straight one, bowled, another bowled, then finishing S+U off with a leg before. Leach had wrapped them up and sent them packing, 4.4-0-9-4, great figures The Leech.

Sulhamstead and Ufton were all out for just 78. Only the giant was left unbeaten in the middle, and he made the fielders pay. His giant hands crushing every hand they shook.

Crows Twos win by 120 runs. Great performance in the field, not a single miss-field. Clarke diving stop, and new boy Utterson playing through the pain barrier. The spirit was great, here's to more great days like this at the GH Oval.
