Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Sunday XI v Theale & Tilehurst on Sun 09 Jun 2013 at 2:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Sunday Crows defeat Theale and Tilehurst in a nervy finish at New Ground.

The forecast was hot, the weather was decidedly cold. The skipper announced (to much grumbling) that a timed game would be the format...at the end of the match the skipper was preaching to the converted!! Shilts went out for the toss, and after 5 minutes of the T&T captain arguing about the format, lost and T&T opted to bat. He suggested that the first innings should finish at 5.30pm (BST). He was politely reminded that Crowthorne is in the same time zone as Theale, and that in order to finish the game before it got dark, tea would be taken at 4.30pm (BST). In their desperation to change the format they even attempted to break the clock!

Leachy, clearly still drunk from the night before, came into bowl. His line and length was superb, and comparable to that of a man who's been sober for 20 years. The first ball was edged short to slip, and that was the only real chance Mr BMW offered for some time. Mr BMW and 'Darren' set about the bowling, putting on a partnership of 150. The Crows kept up their discipline in the field (only 8 extras the whole innings!). Maroon Baroon came on and bowled well, and eventually got the edge to a good catch behind the stumps. Darren was hesitant in walking, but along with the umpire seemed convinced by the appeal. Mr BMW meanwhile had been peppering the ball about, and dangerously close to his BMW...which he pointed out to everyone at every opportunity. The Crows were hoping that the robust Vauxhall Zafira, cleverly parked by Mrs Shilts, would nicely cannon the ball straight through the windscreen of the BMW. Meanwhile the words of Crows bowling/fielding/batting coach 'David Shawker' were starting to ring true, and 1 really did bring not just 2, but 4!. T&T went from 150-0 to 166-4, as Barron added another, as did Joey. Mr BMW was brilliantly dismissed, as Sean O'Clarke found the pot of gold and skittled him out in a very tidy spell. Further wickets came for Dan and Ant A, and T&T finished on 265-6, which at the regulation tea time of 4.30pm (BST) seemed like an imposing total.

Barron and Joe Joe (so good we named him twice) went out to bat. Barron started well but edged to the slips chasing a wide one. David Shawker came in and peppered it around, adding a quick 28 before being dismissed. I missed what happened to Sean as I blinked, but he appeared to come back very quickly. Leachy came in at 5. Not sure which of the 3 balls he was seeing he was supposed to hit, he just swang the bat. Everyone was getting excited as he powered to 34, but after back to back 6s he edged one onto the stumps. He promptly came back to the pavilion and passed out. Joe Joe was just doing his thing at the other end, holding it all together and made his way to a classy 50. Will came out to join him, with the score at 124. With only 20 overs remaining a further 142 runs seemed unlikely, but Joe and Will put on an incredible partnership of 105 and gave the Crows real belief that they could win. Joe was dismissed for an excellent 67, and Ant came out to join his brother. Mr and Mrs Avrili were envisaging an awkward evening at home if it went wrong, but Ant supported Will brilliantly and by the time Will was out for 84 the Crows only needed 15 for victory. Dan came out to join Ant, and between them they knocked off the remaining runs with 11 balls to spare. It had been a run chase of epic proportions, and had seemed so unlikely for so long. It was made even sweeter by the fact the opposition were that little bit arrogant and, I love it when the good guys come out on top. Mr BMW trudged back to the pavilion to find clouds in his coffee, that's right, you really do think Carly Simon's song is about you.

Well done to the Crows, and excellent team display in the field, and then with the bat. A much deserved victory, played 7, won 5, lost 2. It's been a great start to the season, and what's more...a victory for the timed game!
