Hartley Wintney v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Sunday XI on Sun 22 Jul 2012 at 2:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report A great match at a great setting. It was a superb day, a blessing after weeks of rain. The sun was out at full strength, the strip was dry as a bone, and Hartley Wintney's captain's wife put on the best teas yet. Cricket couldn't have got a better example.

Crows lost the toss, the coin falling against statistics, and unfortunately we were sent out to bowl. But the team were in top spirits, and set out for a good day in the field. Top fielding by all players, some great diving by Elsey and Davies, and good chasing and covering by Clarke.

Patel opened the bowling from the road end, with Sheppard from the pavilion end. It took a while to make the break through, but finally Sheppard took it, courtesy of the safe hands of Ingram at mid-off.

Crows had made the important breakthrough, they had a little wait for the second, but then the wickets came fairly regularly. Only the number 5 batsman, Phillips, proved a thorn in Crows' side, hitting a powerful 70.

Sheppard bowled a tidy 6 overs only going for 17. Leach came on as first change for Patel, and opened with his first ever maiden. Good bowling spell from Leach, only going for 29 off 8 overs.

Ingram meanwhile was like a vice at the other end, going for 21 off 8 overs, with two maidens. Leach took the second wicket, and could have got more had the ball landed more fortunately for the Crows, he definitely deserved it. Ant Avrili took the catch at mid-wicket for Leach. Ingram bagged the third wicket with a great catch from Davies, which I think he still has the seam imprinted on his hand from.

Then came Phillips, and unfortunately he struck our bowlers out the park. Ant Avrili and Davies suffering from his bat. Overs were running out, so Patel returned to fight power with power, and he got him, clean bowled.

Davies stayed on, to take 3 wickets, with the chance of a hat-trick at one point across 2 overs, unfortunately thwarted by Phillips. A superb throw from miles out by Sheppard got the run out. Then Clarke was brought on to tie up one end for the last over, and deserved a maiden, only for the umpire to call a wide on his sixth ball.

Comical moments came when the ice-cream man played the pink panther tune for Davies, and other tunes like roll out the barrel also enjoyed in the sunshine.

Good fielding Crows, but we were left with a high total of 177 to chase.

Crows set about the task steadily, with all batsmen looking good out there. Hartley's opening bowlers proving to be very tight. Sheppard unfortunately stepped across his stumps, and was practically walking before the umpire put his finger up for leg before.

Stent was great. Starting with Davies, they worked well together. Then Davies was clean bowled after a good 21. Stent stayed out there and teamed up with Will Avrili. A good partnership of 38 put Crows in a good position. Stent hit two fantastic fours off the pace of the Hartley bowler (Phillips again), brought in to shake up their predominantly slow bowling.

Stent finally went caught behind after catching the ball with the toe of his bat. Good knock Harry.

Out came Ant Avrili, and this proved to be our last batsman. The Avrili brothers putting on 105 to win the match. Really fast running between the stumps, good positional knocks, a huge six from Will, thirteen fours between them, it was a delight to watch. I think one four even ended up rolling into the pub across the road.

The only other small thing of note was Carson fielding for Hartley for almost 30 overs, after one of their players hurt his hand. Totalling him at about 100 overs of fielding for the weekend.

Great game Crows. Good support work in the field by all, great chasing for every ball, don't think I saw a single mistake out there. Good bowling by all. Top batting by all too. Congrats to Will for his 87.

Hartley Wintney were a great bunch to play, and look forward to playing them again next year.
