Match report CROWS STUTTER TO EVERSLEY LOSS DESPITE GOOD BOWLING PERFORMANCE

Crows Sunday Splinter Team almost pulled off a victory in sapping heat at Eversley but eventually fell to a 16 run defeat.

Losing the toss in bright sunshine on the flatest wicket and an outfield like the M40, the Crows looked to be in for a long afternoon chasing the ball around. However Monty and Pete Clarke had other ideas as their new ball spell was tight and coupled with some tight fielding, Eversley were restricted to a meagre run rate, when the early signs were that they might be in the market for a large total.

Clarke accounted for opener "Webby" Webb [Their nickname Department obviously dont get paid as much as ours] with a wind assisted inswinger. At the other end "Brooksy" Brooks was clean bowled by Partridge with an inswinger that defied the physics of the crosswind that had assited Pete.

Young "Juddy" Judd hung around for a long time to make 44 despite Crows best efforts to put him off - causing him to pull out of the ball during the bowlers run up on several occasions. He was to become Joe Davies first victim for the club, though when he skied one to mid-on where Pete Clarke made good ground to take a neat catch, depsite his legs having seized up from his marathon bowling spell earlier.

With Saturday top-dog bowler Ross Chalmers unable/unwilling to bowl, Skipper Partrdge turned to the younger Chalmers brother Mike to turn his arm. He bowled with good pace and the Eversley batsmen found it hard to lay bat on ball especially with the odd ball that climbed from just short of a length.

Behind the sticks, stand-in keeper Tim Leach was itching to bowl, so devised a cunning ruse and swapped his keeper gear with the willing McDowell after 20 overs. However not even Leach himself could have predicted the collapse that was to occurr when the Partridge/Davies/Cluett triumvarate of slow bowlers worked their magic. Partridge and Cluett both got 2 victims whilst leg-spinner Davies bagged himself a 5-for leaving Leach without an opportunity to bowl.

Eversley finished on a snooker-tastic 147all out which looked about 100 short based on the conditions and pitch. Everyone bowled and fielded well to restrict them to this score. After a lavish tea in the main pavilion that would have had Brendy salivating as he marked it, the Crows set about their task knowing sensible batting would surely see them to victory.

McDowell and Stent opened up and looked solid befoe McDowell was trapped leg before to "Sharpy" Sharp and Stent was clean bowled by Will "Fiona" Fullerton.
The usually reliable Cluett was bowled for 5 to end his streak of scores in the 60's. Leach's brief cameo of 4's ended when he was caught for 16. At the other end the injured Chalmers decided that the best course of action was to see how far he could hit it. He did an excellent job of testing his bat with 4 big sixes before losing a bet with the wicketkeeper and falling to a juggled catch at mid on. From that point on it was like watching a car crash. Only Tom Nash, on debut and briefly Davies offered any hope for the Crows. Nash batted sensibly to get to 16 not out but ran out of partners as wickets tumbled around him.

The Final reckoning was Crows lost by 16 runs. The good news was that in Joe Davies and Tom Nash we have 2 excellent additions to the club. Better still was that we were able to field 2 teams on the same day for the first time in living memeory. Well done to all the at played, shame we didnt win but the game was a lot closer than it might have been. We had 6 players who had played on Saturday so in the heat was a bit much to ask to replicate the near perfect performance from the day before.
