Woodley 2 v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Saturday 1st XI on Sat 23 Jun 2012 at 1:30
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report On murky dark Saturday in the outskirts of Reading to find a dampish pitch and a boundary that might have Chris Gayle struggling to find it!

In variable conditions and the threat of rain looming, Crows won the toss and elected to field.

The opening bowling of Ross and Jeff paid dividends with the latter trapping the Woodley opener in front with less than 10 on the board. The first ball of his next over Jeff took the new bat's off stump out of the ground for a golden. It wasn't until the end of the over that Jeff admitted that he was on a hattrick, but was too scared to mention it!! A short rain delay stopped proceedings and but Crows were soon on top again.

As the Woodley pair began to get comfortable at the crease, Mike Chalmers was brought in to replace Ross, and soon sent both bats back to the pavilion with an LBW and clean bowling the settled opener.

With Crows firmly on top and making steady progress through the Woodley team, Ant Cluett was brought in to replace his brother. It wasn't long before the wily spinner got his reward for some clever bowling when a brilliant low catch by Luke, taking it with millimetres to spare, sent the danger man back to the hutch.

As the Crows turned up the pressure with tight overs from both ends, the Woodley bats started to feel with pressure and a well taken Mickey catch gave Ant his second wicket.

Lukey was brought in to replace the hard working Mike and struck immediately with an LBW. Ant responded by clean bowling and Woodley were on the ropes. Then the picture book moment of the game as Luke was drilled to mid off, only for Mickey to take a blinder of a catch high to his right. Mickey "Mitts" Gopie did the jig of joy (or sting relief) and the Crows finished the innings off 3 balls later.

Following a healthy tea (including fruit salad), the opening pair of Barron and Ant began in fine style. Barron having a look at 2 balls, sent the third crashing to the boundary with a classy lofted drive. Both bats rarely looked in danger as Ant placed the ball in gaps running singles and Barron punished anything loose with a range of shots on all sides of the wicket.

Barron punched a ball onto the leg side and with the massive boundary the players resorted to running 4, as the fielder appeared to have to retrieve it from Reading town centre. The feat wasn't repeated, as 2 balls later, Barron punched it a bit harder in order to save the frantic running.

Woodley were left with rotating the bowling to try and make a break through, however with Ant standing firm at one end, the pair raised to 86 off just 14 overs. With the end in sight, Barron reached his half century and immediately played around the straight one.

Ricky McDowell was sent to the crease having watched the proceedings from the side and started with a solid defence. Crows were given a wide. This was the last action for what seemed an eternity as 4 maidens followed. Ricky, having looked at home in the crease, played around the straight one and was clean bowled without score.

Smokin' Joe Davies strode out to the crease with a determined look on his face and quickly got the game moving again. Ant and Joe took charge and within 4 overs the batsmen had taken the Crows to point of victory, and over the line courtesy of a wide.

There were many great performances today and big contributions from Luke (6-3), Mike Chalmers (25-3), Ant Cluett (25-3 & 26*), Jeff Cluett(20-2) and Mitts Gopie taking 2 great catches and almost making a third. Pete Northall kept wicket very well with only (one bye) and everyone fielded with energy and enthusiasm - building pressure and creating chances for the bowlers.

Penultimate away game vs BCS next week, before Crows return to the home of cricket (New Ground) for all but one of their remaining games. Another valuable win next week, will see Crows in contention to challenge for honours at the halfway stage.

Well done chaps!!!
